Anaesthetic Breathing Systems

چکیده

The function of breathing is to maintain a supply of oxygen to the lungs for oxygenation of the tissues, and to remove carbon dioxide from the body. When used for spontaneous ventilation, a breathing circuit must enable a patient to breathe satisfactorily without significantly increasing the work of breathing or the physiological deadspace. It must also conduct inhalational anaesthetic agents to the patient. The volume of gas inspired and expired with each breath is the tidal volume (normally 6-10ml.kg-1), the total volume breathed in a minute is the minute volume and the volume of gas in the lungs at the end of normal expiration is the functional residual capacity (FRC).

Anaesthesia Breathing Systems

Anaesthesia Breathing System (formerly known as anaesthesia Breathing Apparatus or Anaesthesia Breathing Circuit) is an interface between the anaesthetic machine and the patient. They evolved over 160 years from the open systems used by Morton to the present day closed systems using carbon dioxide absorbents. The main purpose of these systems is to deliver the required oxygen and anaesthetic ga...

Breathing Systems Notes

It is made up of multiple components which include;  Fresh gas outlet This connects the breathing system to the anaesthetic machine  Breathing tubes These allow gas to travel to and from the patient  Reservoir bag This allows for visualisation of respiration, accumulation of oxygen and anaesthetic gases and provide a method of ventilation.  Adjustable pressure limiting (APL) valve Allows fo...

Anaesthetic breathing systems in the accident and emergency department.

We report two cases where patients with an acute head injury developed hypercapnia as a result of the inappropriate use of the Magill breathing circuit. The Magill circuit is inefficient when used for controlled ventilation because the patient is ventilated with his own expired gas and develops hypercapnia. The suitability of alternative breathing systems are discussed.

Improving the efficiency of the drawover anaesthetic breathing system.

We investigated modifications to the reservoir tube usually used in drawover anaesthetic breathing systems as a method of improving its efficiency and performance. The resulting oxygen concentration was recorded at different oxygen flow rates whilst an artificial lung was being ventilated over a range of minute volumes. Addition of a reservoir bag and valves significantly increased the measured...

An assessment of the Neff circulator.

THE PROBLEMS of eliminating expired carbon dioxide from anaesthetic circuits have excited the ingenuity of designers for many years. Carbon dioxide absorption systems, initially introduced in the form of "to-and-fro" circuits, produce an apparatus dead-space which tends to increase as the absorption material becomes exhausted. Means of circulating the gases through the absorber in order to redu...
